Another post, so soon after the last! I'll try and keep up a more regular posting regime when I can, it helps to document what I've been up to and is a bit less transient than Facebook.
This time, it's my Orlock gang for new Necromunda, the Sump Snakes, and their convoy ship, the 'Sumpcarraldo':
Lots more photos and details after the break...
So, this is a slightly different take on the standard Orlock ganger style, I decided to make them as a gang that specialises in convoy support, offering protection to traders shipping cargo through the Sump to and from the Ash Wastes beyond. To aid them in this, they have their own Convoy vessel, the Sumpcarraldo. Added to this, they can take their vessel out of the sump and to a safer area, via their Herzog class heavy cargo lugger and custom trailer:
Because of the nautical theme, I decided to forgo the usual Orlock heads and went for WFB Empire heads mainly, as they looked older, more grizzled and rough looking.
The leader of the Snakes is Captain Kinski. Here he can be seen with his pet Trazioran Spire-Hawk, and alongside his faithful Servo-Monkey, Klyde:
Model-wise, he's a fairly heavily converted Forgeworld Slate Merdena Hired gun. The monkey is likewise also heavily converted, and I think he's from the Empire Handgunners plastic set.
The rest of the crew is a motley bunch of conversions based on the Orlock box set but with headswaps and a few additions from the bits box. I've not got as far as naming them all yet, so here they are in all their glory. The couple of younger models I'm treating as Juves in-game. One is a converted gobbo and the other is a Gorkamorka model.
Lastly, there's Macula, the cybernetic hound that came with the Slate Merdena model. As it's such a nice model, I had to paint it and add it to the crew.
And now, on to the ship itself. This was originally a 'Rambo' Patrol boat kit made by Monogram in the 80's, with a whole world of junk glued to it! It does separate from the trailer, so eventually I want to make a scenic sump water base for it to sit in. One of my eventual aims is to make a Necromunda table that incorporates elements of a dock on the edge of the Sump into it, so hopefully it'll fit into that. One day, lol.
The boarding ramp you can see at the back is double-hinged, and can be raised or lowered to allow access into the rear crew area.
The Sumpcarraldo name came from my long-term obsession with Werner Herzog films, specifically in this case, 'Fitzcarraldo', where the eponymous 'hero' transports a steamship through the South American jungle in a doomed attempt to make a fortune. The filming was notoriously difficult, as they did genuinely transport a 320 ton steamship through the jungle. There were several deaths, and Kinski himself almost ended up getting murdered by locals as they hated him so much. Hopefully my Captain Kinski isn't hated so much by his crew, and manages to win a game or two!
So, there you go, another pointlessly large vehicle built by me that has absolutely no use in-game beyond a big piece of scenery! I'm hoping to actually get a game in with the crew at some point though, I vaguely paid attention to the Necromunda rules when making them, so hopefully I can get a game over at Warhammer World at some point.
That is spectacular! Awesome work!
ReplyDeleteFantastic work! Great painting and conversions. And it seems very apt that it should be a pointless vessel given the crazy inspiration. I'm surprised how well the Orlocks fit a pirate theme. Are the Necromunda models slightly bigger than standard 40k people? They seem quite tall.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yes, the new Necromunda models are a little bigger, but not so much as to be really out of place. I'll try and do a comparison photo at some point.
DeleteMost exciting project I've seen in quie a while. I don't know where to star with, everything is so inspired. Now I envision battles between boats on trailers on a desert. You need to build a fleet!
ReplyDeleteI've got a load of the new GW shipping containers, so I might build enough transport wagons to make a convoy, and have games based around that. Trying to make it through hostile territory without getting looted would be fun.
DeleteSo much awesomeness here. What a way to re-activate your blogging. I knew the name of the boat sounded familiar but I couldn't place it. I've meant to watch the movie for a while.
ReplyDeleteOh man that's an excellentt gang, perfect twist of many themes into one coherent gang. Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteI laughed at the pointlessly large vehicle comment. I completely empathise with you Evo as I have done (and continue to do so) the same thing time and again. I don't know what it is that drives us to do it, but they are fun to build aren't they.
ReplyDeleteYour land ship is really cool! It would be fun to battle around on the pretend tabletop. The boarding plank is a nice touch.
Excellent stuff mate :)
Cheers! I seem to be obsessed with land ships, what with this one and the Halfling one from earlier in the year!
DeleteWhat a project: there's nothing pointless about pointlessly large vehicles! And the crew are such an array of characters too.
ReplyDeleteThis is a superb project - the pirate theme running through works brilliantly, a very Necromunda feel.
ReplyDeleteIt's full of great ideas! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteVery good work, and pointlessly large or no, it is a fun build, and great to look at.
ReplyDeleteShips fighting each other on trailers at low speed seems particularly amusing too...
