Altheim Part 11: The Docks

Ok, so, time for a bit more Altheim. I've made a start on the docks area, so these are warehouses in the Dutch style, so narrow and tall, designed to fit side by side facing the docks, with living and working space above the storage area.

First up is the Becker Import Company warehouse, left to dereliction after being sealed up on the orders of the Guard due to irregularities with the quality of fish. Of course, the other story is that Old Man Becker wasn't paying enough in bribes to the Red Hand, a shadowy group of criminals that have high level connections and may or may not be secretly a choas cult...

*Taps Microphone* Is anybody still here?

Ok, I'll be honest, I've neglected this blog for the shiny lights of Facebook groups and Instagram for a while now, but I've come to the conclusion that it's all so transient and impermanent, so I'm thinking about getting back on here and posting a bit more often.

That does, however, beg the question, is anyone still on here? I can post all I like, but if no one actually sees it, I may as well just print out a scrapbook and read it at home!

So, what have I been up to? I've been learning 3d sculpting, printing big things and doing more Altheim buildings mostly, with some ww2 and Trench Crusade in there as well, with a few commissions along the way. I've actually been pretty productive in the last year or so, So here's a few bits I've got done recently:

Next up in the Altheim project is the old Garden of Morr:

Altheim Part 6: Eolfric the Beggar, and his humble home.

Back to Altheim, and this time it's something a whole lot more humble. I recently painted up the 'Beggar' model from the Marauder MM62 range, and decided that even though he's down on his luck, he still needs somewhere to live:

Altheim: Part 5 - The Watch House

Another day, another finished building! This time it's the home of the Altheim Watch:

The Altheim Watch House, with the Watch on parade outside.

As well as the house, I've also repurposed some old F4 Mercenaries a I painted up a long time ago to act as the Watch themselves.

If you want to see and know more, it's all after the cut...

Altheim: Part 4 - Bill Stickers Was Innocent!

As you may have seen from my previous builds, I like to use posters on my scenery to make it look a bit more 'real' and 'lived in'. So far I've been mainly using the old ones that came with in the 'Warhammer Townscape' book, but I didn't want to keep repeating them, so I've decided to make my own. If you want them, there's a link further down in this post, but here's a quick shot to show you what they look like:

The City of Altheim: Part Three - Leopold's Rare Book Emporium

Veering back to Warhammer after my recent Saga-related excursions, I've managed to finish an Altheim character and his home for you to take a look at: This time it's Leopold Kochenheim, owner of Leopold Kochenheim's Rare Book Emporium.

Leopold, in front of his shop/home.

'The Pride of Jamakeer' - A 'Maelstrom' Class Light Cargo Carrier - Finished!

Well, here you go, I finally finished the 'Maelstrom' Class cruiser and my word, it's a biggie...

In fact it's not just a biggie, it's positively huge, coming in at just over 20 inches long! It's by far the largest 40k model I've ever made. There's a load more photos after the cut, if you're so inclined...

HIL Sector's Finest, AKA Port Imperiale's Arbites Station

So, I'm still not really up to painting, but I can at least get around to photographing a few pieces I finished before surgery.

This is the station I made for my Arbites Squad. Long since cut off from the Imperium, they are totally isolated and operate mainly in a low-key police role, picking up the *really* bad criminals that rise to the top of the pile of scum that makes up Port Imperiale.

A rare group shot in front of their HQ.

And a more regular shot, guarding the building from the roof, with a couple of Arbites about to head out on a patrol.

I'll hopefully get a few more shots up of a some other bits I've done in the next few days.

A Local Port For Local People...

The Old Main Drag...

Well, I finally got around to making up some baseboards for Port Imperiale, so I thought I'd do a few photos. No real reason or game involved, just fancied setting up some models, so here you go...

The 'Maelstrom' Class Light Cargo Lugger

So, as I mentioned in my last post, there's an even bigger ship on the block, and here it is, the 'Maelstrom' Class Light Cargo Lugger.

Crashed 'Rover' Class Cargo Lugger update..

Just a minor progress update today, As I decided I'd get the airbrush and compressor out of storage and give 'em a go again, for about the first time in 8 years.

Paint was chosen for me, as it was about the only one of my Vallejo paints that hadn't run out/dried up. I've since re-ordered a bunch of Vallejo Model Air paints, but thought yellow was a good way to go anyway:

Warhammer Townscape project update..

Just a short update today, but a bit of a resource for you all, if you need it. As you may know (if you read this regularly) my current main project is to recreate all of the Warhammer Townscape buildings in a more modern way, with textures and detailing. I was just getting to the stage of detailing the gatehouse, and wanted to add some of the little posters that were spread throughout the book. Part of the original charm of the book was all these little details that you could add to make your buildings a bit more unique:

A couple of posters in use. Don't try and sneak past the militia.

To that end (and to make detailing the rest of my buildings a little easier, I've gone through the book and digitally pulled all of the posters and signs out of it onto one sheet. They're just great little details that add to a fantasy building. Hopefully you think the same, and if so, they're here for you to download (after the cut!)

The Heroic Defenders of La Maisontaal!

So, sorry for being quiet recently, but apart from being ill, I've been working on this little lot, which are part of the 1986 WFB 'Vengeance of the Lichemaster' scenario.

More denizens of the Port...

A bit more background to the inhabitants of Port Imperiale, this time. I'd like to introduce you all to Captain Jerry 'Lucky' LaVarr (Retd), owner of Lucky's Bar, with one of his 'liberated' Regimental Killbots, 'Itchy', which serves as his bouncer:

I've not been entirely idle...

Here's a small taster of something I've been working on...

It's the fortified monastery of the cult of St Sigmar At The Crossroads, a small, obscure Sigmarite cult based on the coast, in the sparsely populated Nordland Province of the Empire.

My plan is to create a small, isolated town, 'Altheim', with it's assorted inhabitants and characters. Mainly to give my friend Andy a target for his Norscan Warband to attempt to raid, but also as an project to get me back into wargaming after the bad taste it's left me with recently, as the character models are all single figures that I can paint up as the mood takes me, with only a few larger units. (the Town militia, mainly, and possibly a unit of warrior knights holed up in a coastal fort).

The village buildings themselves are more of a large project, but at least I've made a start on it.

So, there you go.

Raiders of the Lost Skip!

Something different, a bit of history for you, this time!

There's been some discussion recently on the rather awesome http://realmofchaos80s.blogspot.co.uk blog about the rather sad fate of a whole lot of unique artwork and goodies that were trashed in the the move of the design studio from Enfield Chambers to Castle Boulevard in about 1991. Specifically, in the comments, here.

I was in the (un)fortunate position of being a Mail Order Troll back in the day. We basically got all the menial jobs that the artistic talent didn't want to do, and the casters were too ham-fisted to do. During the move, a bunch of us got tasked into box-moving, van-driving and assorted manual labour, shuttling boxes of stuff between buildings. At the end of the move, there was an empty, sad looking former design studio, and a rather large and full skip sat outside it. With us trolls being a rather feral lot, we obtained permission from management to go and rifle through said skip, with a view to nabbing off with some goodies. Remember, this is years before eBay, we just wanted unreleased stuff and figures for gaming, rather than going through it with an eye for profit.

Tragically, as it had rained, most, if not all of the artwork in there, from *all* of the major GW artists at the time, not just Gary's work, was ruined, but in amongst the banana peels, broken furniture and lots of empty beer cans (I kid you not!) were a few gems. One of them was this:

Which, the *very* astute of you might notice, is some of the scenery from the now legendary Realms of Chaos 'Slaves To Darkness' Book.

In fact, if you look closely, you can spot it on the far left of this pic, from the StD book:

Originally, my manager at the time said he believed it was made by John Blanche, but after some research, it's looking more like it was made by Jamie Sims. Either way, it's a great little piece.

The box actually contained all of the scenery featured in the book, just tossed away, unwanted. I managed to rescue it, pretty much undamaged, and used it in many a battle, until I left the hobby.

In a complete fit of idiocy sold my entire collection in the late 90's, when I was rather short of money and needed to buy a house. These last two bits were in a box that got missed, and are now on display at home.

Of course, if I'd waited for the age of eBay, I could have probably purchased a much larger house, as my collection contained vast amounts of rare and unreleased lead. I've since spent the last decade or so glued to eBay, paying stupid amounts of money for things I used to own.

Ah well!

This place won't build itself, you know...

Finally made a start on some buildings over the weekend. My ideas for the look of the place are a combination of Mos Eisley, mixed with some of the photos I've seen of the big ship dismantling yards in India/Bangladesh. Buildings built out of, and even repaired with bits of vehicle and spaceship, all filthy, old and decrepit.

Plenty of pics to follow...
