Altheim Part 9: The Old Garden of Morr

Next up in the Altheim project is the old Garden of Morr:

More pics etc after the cut...

The Old Garden of Morr is actually one of the oldest remaining structures in the city. According to historical records, the Garden predates the city walls which were actually built through it, causing outcry at the time with the Cult of Morr. This is thought to be the reason why there is a crypt actually built into it, to replace the original crypt that was demolished to build the wall.

Because burials were forbidden within the city limits several hundred years ago, the Garden is no longer used for actual burials. The noticeboard is still used for posting death notices, and the wall crypt is used as a funerary chapel for coffins to lay in before being taken to one of the burial grounds outside the city limits.

Dorrian, a wandering Priest of Morr, has been the resident guardian for several years now, living in the crypt itself, and providing the necessary benedictions to the recently dead to allow them to enter Morr's Kingdom.

Because of the ages of the graves there are few direct relatives to care for them, meaning the garden is in a fairly dilapidated condition, although Dorrian makes sure the graves remain sealed and that the Garden doesn't get any worse, occasionally securing funds from the richer descendants of the interred to carry out limited repairs.

Dorrian, the Priest of Morr:

This was a fairly simple little project, brought about by memories of a small Jewish graveyard I used to live near. It was ancient, built into a row of terraced houses and was just an anonymous gate in a wall that you wouldn't know what it unless you looked carefully. I made the gate for this one a little more ostentatious, and the contents are all from the bits box. Most of the gravestones are from Renedra, and the walls are actually the same cobbles I used for the roads!

Dorrian, the priest is an old Citadel Cleric/Monk that I found headless and with one arm in the bottom of a box. A few Empire bits rebuilt him, and a skull to top off his staff seemed appropriate.

All in all, a quick project that I like, and serves as a place for characters to hide in during games!

  1. This is brilliant! It absolutely evokes those odd little urban graveyards squeezed into odd places. The sign over the gate looks great- the lettering seems to evoke slotta tan lettering to me - did you sculpt the text?

    1. Thanks! And yes, it was a little experiment in green stuff to see if I could actually do it. I didn’t get as far as doing an actual font, but it worked out ok I think!

  2. Cool - I particularly like the deaths board. Very handy in a Warhammer town I'd expect!

  3. I love the 'building the wall through the cematary" bit. Sounds just like what a local building authority would choose to do. I'm sure it's not a huge security problem if the priest of morr is subverted and the shrine desecrate. no siree.

  4. Lovely piece. It's true that it really looks like those graveyards you can sometimes find around lost corners in some old towns. It has quite a flavour!
