Wow, where did the time go? Back with Saga and Slann!

Well, it's been a good few months since I last posted anything of interest, so I thought I'd better make a bit of an effort to update the blog. It's been a bit of a dead season for gaming and painting for me, as I've had to let real life get in the way. In short, my health issues have meant that I don't have as much energy as I have previously, and so most of that has been going into my 'real' job of restoring old motorbikes, and some other maintenance work.

However, having said that, I've recently changed medication and the results have been a bit more positive, so I've had more energy and actually got to the painting desk again.

If you want to see what I've been up to, it's after the break...

So, one of the main things I've been up to recently is starting to get into Saga (the game system, not the holidays for pensioners!) I've decided to go for Anglo Saxons to start with, and made a start on buildings for a Dark Ages table, as you can see:

I've made a very basic start on my Anglo Saxon warband too, or more accurately, I've painted my Warlord.

Having said all that, I've made a decision on my next main project, and it's going to be the WFB Slann army I've been collecting for the last 15 years or so.

It's been a particularly tricky project for a couple of reasons. Firstly they're quite rare as a range, they were particularly unpopular as an army back in the day so there aren't that many of them around to buy, and secondly (and partially because of the lack of interest) they only released one main range of models, and so there are very limited poses for the units. Thirdly, it didn't help that there was a preslotta range that didn't match in any way with the newer slotta range, either in size or design ethos.

Anyway, on to the army. This is what I've got to paint, so far:

And here's what it equates to, in terms of the 3rd Edition Army list:

1 Lotus Lord on palanquin
2 Pond Masters on Cold ones
1 Auspice of Heaven (Wizard) on palanquin
1 Seeker of Stars (Wizard) on Cold One
10 Bull Slann Cold One Riders
5 Bull Slann Cold One Riders
10 Jaguar Warriors
5 (2) Warrior Priests
10 (9) Alligator Warriors
10 (7) Eagle Warriors
10 Bull Slann
10 (2) Venom Tribe
20 Spawn Band
20 Spawn Band
10 Scouts
20 (16) Human Slaves
2 Animal Handlers
5 Troglodytes
20 Lizardmen
1 War Altar

The numbers in brackets are the total I have of each unit so far. I'm mainly missing slann with blowpipes for my Venom Tribe unit, but I'm a few short of the specialist units.

So far, the only units I've managed to get painted are my scouts and the Human Slaves:

As you can see, I've tried to overcome the limitations of the model range by doing some fairly heavy conversion work, something that's a bit of a theme in the army. Hopefully I'll be able to show you some more in the near future!

  2. The slann army is already an impressive and imposing selection. I take it you've looked at alternative manufacturers to see if the models fit? There's some options with Katsina Miniatures bizaza and The Little Soldier Company's tenoch.

The finished units look great - I like the use of blue across both slaves and slann.

    1. Yeah, I've bought into the first Bizaza KS, but unfortunately the're way too big to fit in with the rank and file, so as the largest models, they're in there as my Bull Slann Elites. I've also picked up 20 of the Tenoch with hand weapons to use as a standard Spawn Band, but some of the models are a bit too Lizardmen-like in the face to fit in well, in my eyes.

As far as the colour scheme goes, I'm doing my Cold Ones in blue, as well as my more 'primitive'/less evolved models, such as the scouts and Troglodytes, with the higher caste elite models being in more exotic colours. Eventually! ;)
