The Angry Brigade and their Spaceship, Bakunin

Time for another stupidly large spacehip! This time it's the 'Bakunin', and Port Imperiale's very own Anarchopunk Space Pirates, the Angry Brigade:

More photos and details after the cut, as usual...

First up, the pirates themselves, the Angry Brigade. Operating out of Port Imperiale, they mainly operate sneak-boarding engagements on unsuspecting Imperial cargo ships, either by playing dead and launching a distress signal, or by masking their signal to replicate an Imperial Navy Inspection Ship and docking with the potential victim.

Once docked, they rapidly overpower the crew, take over the ship and transfer the cargo to a freighter that was waiting out of scanner range. Once emptied, they disable the ship's comms and make their escape.

The erstwhile 'Organiser' of the Angry Brigade, (leader is a bit of an oxymoron in an anarchist commune!) is a mysterious character known only as D'ruti. Armed with a bolt gun and a heavy duty combat shotgun, during attacks he's usually second into the breach after the next member, Lunk.

Lunk is, well, we're not entirely sure what Lunk is. They are either some kind of cyborg or a previously unknown xenos lifeform inside a permanent suit of heavy armour. Their size, armour and lack of fear means they're the first through the breach during attacks, and they're yet to take any serious damage.

Rudolf, much like the rest of the Brigade, is wearing assorted combat gear picked up over the years from raided ships and is armed with an autogun.

Zepf is next up, and frankly he's a little strange. Wearing facepaint and having 'chaos' painted on his shoulderpad (mainly to intimidate any erstwhile defenders from putting up too much resistance) he's also dressed in camo fatigues and armed with an Autogun:

Side note; I'm particularly pleased with how the 'Chaos' shoulderpad turned out, so here's a better angle of it:

A close combat crazy now, Lingg can be seen here with an autopistol and some loot he's recently liberated:

Oscar next, wearing a respirator and armed with an Autogun. He's a solid, reliable member of the team:

Parsons is another of the lead members of the group, and a fan of a band of Tek-Noisemongers called 'Doom', from the Hiveworld Bringham-6:

Neebe is another fan of obscure Tek-Noisemongers, this time using the names ''Cud' and 'Amebix', although his somewhat dubious musical tastes are backed up with an Autogun.

Rau is another member, armed with a sawn-off Autogun, for easier use in cramped corridors:

Ratter has a bolter and an extreme interest in anarchopunk politics, as can be seen from his jacket:

Another close combat specialist, Schwab is armed with a laspistol and a chainsword.

Finally for the Brigade is Fischer, a one-armed crazy armed with a lasgun:

As far as painting these goes, I had great fun with them, although the logos really represent the absolute limit of what I can paint these days. The combination of nerve damage and pain meds means my hands shake quite a bit these days. Having said that, I'm fairly happy with how they came out:

Next up is their ship. The Angry Brigade use a rather dilapidated 'Avenger' class Long range survey ship, renamed the 'Bakunin'. Converted to carry a selection of concealed heavy weaponry for anti-ship engagements, along with smaller anti-personnel weaponry for ground attacks.

The ship itself is a lightly converted MB Games 'Star Bird/Space Avenger'. I had one of these as a kid, they made sound effects and if you had a friend with one you could use them like a laser-tag game, they were great! I didn't want to ruin a decent one, so I bought a cheap broken one that was missing some bits to paint up. I'm quite pleased with how it came out.

  1. Fantastic stuff. I recognize various bits from GW but it's very seamless and everything fits. I definitely dig the graffiti on the front, most appropriate for an anarcho commune group.
Lots of cool old minis as well. What a filthy collection of dangerous scum...
Think you will ever run a spaceship vs spaceship game like the governor general has done? I expect it's fairly demanding for enough floor space.

    1. Thanks! I’ve not thought about aerial ship vs ship games, I tend to do most of my gaming around the Port, so the ships are all landed. Mind you, even that takes up a lot of room!

  2. Absolutely fantastic! Even at my absolute best, I'm barely dancing at the edges of what you say is your limit "these days." Fantastic stuff! The logos are crisp and colorful. The lettering is clean, legible, and varied. The Composition of the unit is classic. The Avenger is a gorgeous conversion. Splendidly done! I'm tempted to find one of those myself to give the Rainbow Connection and the TransRim Starshuttle more company. (You can never have too many ships in your port, right?) Bravo!

    1. Thank you! The Avenger was surprisingly cheap, I waited for the right one and picked it up for less than £20 (GBP) delivered from eBay. And no, you can never have too many ships!

  3. Well these are just awesome, and I loved the little rundown of each of the crew. All that freehand is particularly excellent too!

  4. As ever, inspirational stuff. I really enjoy how you add layers of detail both from a visual/modelling perspective, and in terms of the backstory. The models all hang together brilliantly visually, at the same time as being completely individual with their facepaint and logos. It's great to see some other models like the Power Armour marine being included too :)

    1. Thanks! I've been scratching my head for a use for the PA guy for ages. It's an ace model but the odd armour doesn't really fit in with any other models, even the other early marines, so dropping it into a band of misfits seemed appropriate!
