It seems like a bunch of other people are doing this, so thought I'd copy their lead, mostly to reassure myself I did actually get some hobby stuff done this year, as tbh, it's not felt very productive.
As you'll know if you follow my blog, I kind of stopped posting for a couple of years, a combination of hobby burnout, not feeling enthused about posting, and tbh wondering if the blog format was still worthwhile anymore, but I came back in March and decided to make a bit more of an effort.
This big guy was probably the catalyst for all that, as I really enjoyed printing, assembling and painting him:
Anyway, if you want to see more, then take a look after the break...
I've had a few different projects on the go this year, first up was an early ww2 British Expeditionary Force army, with the world's cutest tank, the Matilda I. I've checked the scale, and this really is about the right size for it!
I also had a play about with Trench Crusade this year, designing and printing a couple of vehicles. First up a Prussian tank based on the German A7v:
He was sadly missing one of his weapons, so I improvised with one from (I think!) the WFB plastic giant kit.
Altheim made a return after a long haitus as well, with the Town Hall from the Townscape book, along with three sctratchbuilt warehouses for the docks area:
And also a watchtower, as at some point I want to do a small farming village in the woods outside Altheim proper, so they'll need some defences if they're not protected by the walls!
I also painted a few dwarves that were sat around in the leadpile for no real reason, I just liked them:
For non-GW stuff, I painted up a giant Scorpion, Giant Snake, and a combat Robot, all from North Star. I love big monsters and big robots, and these were all great fin to paint!
Back to GW, I painted up a 40k Robot to celebrate getting 600 followers on Instagram:
I also had a couple of fun painting commissions this year, an original 3rd Edition Changer of the ways:
And what is probably my favourite paint job of the year, a Great Imperial Dragon. This combined the original model with some sculpted terrain, mixed in with some 3d printed stalagmites, and I think it worked really well: I'm just gutted I didn't get to keep it, but the actual owner was really happy with it, so I'm glad about that!
In other 3d printed news, I printed out a 28mm scale Reaver Titan, which is currently being assembled and painted, but sadly didn't get finished before the end of the year
The Reaver has always been my favourite Titan, and I'm having great fun painting and weathering it, but it doesn't half take a long time! Anyway, this is how far I've got with him:
And finally, probably the favourite 3d print design I've made this year, which was a build of a piece of Carl Critchlow artwork from the Dark future days:
And the original art it's based on:
So, there you go. Not a vast amount done, but looking back it was more productive than I thought it was!

I think your output was very respectable in terms of quantity and excellent when it comes to quality. The highlight for me is your Altheim work though I also like the look of what you're doing with 3D printing as well. Bonus credit for getting some Paranoia figures on the table. I must do something with mine some day.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm enjoying the 3d printing, it certainly has it's place in modern gaming, and even a small place in the older stuff I'm more a fan of.
DeleteThe Stalagmites on the dragon's base for example just add to the overall model in general I think, without being a distraction. I'm still not a fan of most 'modern' style digital sculpts, but I acknowledge they're very talented people.
I tend to use my prints for scenic accessories rather than as a replacement for scratchbuilding.
"And also my take on Lawrence of Antioch, on a tracked motorcycle I originally designed for my (long stalled!) 40k Tallarn army."
ReplyDeleteThat is brilliant, great idea executed very nicely!!
"at some point I want to do a small farming village in the woods outside Altheim proper, so they'll need some defences if they're not protected by the walls!"
Oooh that will be even more up my street than the town as I am working on my own townscape inspired village out in the countryside.
Nice touch on the Imperial Robots leg ident number.
